I am an Ironman

After 2 years, I think it's time to make this "Instagram official."

In November 2021, I took on the ultimate challenge: An Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and then a marathon). I committed myself to my training and prepared for a long day.

It was supposed to happen at IM California that October. My grandmother passed away the day before the race, and I had a printed photo of her tucked in my run gear. That race was rained out (atmospheric rivers are real) so I quickly took a spot at Ironman Arizona, four weeks later.

The swim was long. The bike had three long climbs (and a cyclist who swerved in front of me and almost ended my day). My back and obliques cramped during the run, and I could hardly stand up straight, but as I screamed in pain and triumph, I managed to stay up for the all-important photos at the finish. Mike Reilly called my name: "David Schach, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!" and it was official.

That day wasn't about time - it was about overcoming adversity and discovering that I am stronger than I think.

Thank you to John Dahlz, my amazing coach.
@mikey.olz12 for answering any question, however odd
@mariofraioli for suggesting I have a shirt for running at night. And for the best advice: Just be consistent.
@pickybars for the wonderful nutrition and the running hat I requested
@dr.markpt and the staff at @pt.renew for getting me strong and able to be in aero for more than 45 seconds
@tsrealsf for laying a solid bike foundation at Shift
@brettmanningne for being a super cycling partner for long rides
@goldengatetriathlonclub, which is the best triathlon club ever
@fleshmanflyer for autographing my training log
@jessemthomas for being such an inspiration and for being just plain awesome

I now know that I can do anything I put my mind to. It's true, as Ironman says: Anything is possible.
